Hello world!

People often say entrepreneurship is risky, unpredictable, and not for the faint of heart.

Starting Out: What I Wish Every New Entrepreneur Knew

When I think back to the moment I first decided to step fully into entrepreneurship, I remember that cocktail of excitement, nerves, and “Lord, I hope this works” running through my mind. And trust me — every business owner you admire started in that same place.

People often say entrepreneurship is risky, unpredictable, and not for the faint of heart. And while there’s truth in that, there’s also a myth that’s been floating around for years — one that scares folks before they even get started.

Myth Buster: “Most Businesses Fail in the First Year.”

For the longest time, I believed that most businesses didn’t make it past year one. You probably heard it too — that scary statistic folks like to drop into conversation like a caution sign.

But the newest data tells a very different story.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 80% of new businesses actually survive their first year.
Yes — 80%.

The truth is, most businesses don’t struggle on day one. The real challenges tend to hit later, around the five-year mark, when survival rates level out to about 50%. That shift has helped me frame entrepreneurship differently: it’s not your first year you should fear — it’s building a foundation that can carry you beyond it.

And that’s where your story truly begins.

“You Can’t Build a House on Sand.”

I’ll never forget working with one of my earliest clients back in 2024. She had a beautiful business idea — passion, talent, customers ready to buy — but her numbers were a mystery. Money was coming in, money was going out, but there was no real trail to follow.

By month three, she looked at me and said, “I think my business is growing… but I can’t prove it.”

That moment changed how I teach new entrepreneurs forever.

Action Step: Know Your Numbers Before You Leap

Before you launch, take time to:

  • Outline your actual startup costs
  • Make a simple cash-flow plan
  • Set up your bookkeeping system early
  • Keep business and personal accounts separate
  • Track money consistently, even if the business is small

Your numbers tell your business story long before your brand does.
And knowing them from day one helps you stay in that 80% — and breeze confidently toward year five.

Community Will Carry You Further Than Hustle Alone

Another client once told me she felt like she had to do everything herself — marketing, bookkeeping, operations, customer service… all of it. She was exhausted before her business even took off.

It wasn’t until she joined a community of entrepreneurs and asked for support that she finally exhaled. Sometimes the difference between burnout and breakthrough is simply not being alone.

Action Step: Build Your Success Circle

Instead of isolating yourself, try:

  • Finding a mentor or coach
  • Joining a local or online business community
  • Asking questions — even the “basic” ones
  • Outsourcing one task that drains you
  • Surrounding yourself with people who get it

Strong businesses are rarely built solo. Your circle becomes your strength.

Give Yourself Permission to Learn, Not Be Perfect

Your first year is going to stretch you. You’ll try things that flop. You’ll try things that work. You’ll adjust. You’ll pivot. You’ll grow.

Early on, I used to think everything had to look perfect right away — perfect systems, perfect branding, perfect strategy. But perfection isn’t what keeps you in business. Adaptability does.

Action Step: Commit to Progress, Not Perfection

Try this approach:

  • Set short, achievable monthly goals
  • Review your progress every 30 days
  • Track what worked and what didn’t
  • Adjust your strategy as needed
  • Celebrate even the smallest wins

Your early years aren’t a test — they’re training.

Final Thought: Your Business Has a Story. Let Yourself Be the Author.

Starting a business can feel overwhelming, but it’s also one of the most rewarding journeys you’ll ever take. Every entrepreneur you admire had messy beginnings, confusing moments, and days when they questioned everything.

You’re not alone.
You’re not behind.
You’re not unqualified.

You’re learning — and learning is the real first step.

What matters isn’t how perfectly you start.
What matters is how willing you are to grow.

Your business has a story.
And you, Entrepreneur, are already writing it beautifully.
